Blazing a trail to Marrakesh: Latin America leads the way

By Marrakesh Notification No. 8: Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled (here), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) lets everyone know that the Argentine Republic has become the latest country to commit itself to the Marrakesh Treaty, which it has now ratified.

This still doesn't being the Treaty into force. However, of the eight countries that have so far either ratified or acceded to the Treaty, exactly half of them are from the Latin American zone, with Argentina joining neighbours Paraguay and Uruguay as well as El Salvador.

Today the UK, Germany, Italy, Hungary and Poland voted (via their deputy ambassadors) -to effectively block the EU moving ahead to try and put in place the ratification of this Treaty.

Spain, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Finland -all wanted to move ahead together with the rest of the EU

Good old UK -it seems the benefits scrounger arguments extend to the visually impaired.

Rights for the disabled?

Don't even get me started on the agenda of the other MS in this dubious group which together forms a blocking minority.
